Concluding the “Countdown to Canada Day” is the Flag of Canada! I greatly admire our neighbors to the north for many reasons, including their flags.
The now ubiquitous maple leaf flag was the result of a tumultuous process, ending in 1964. Prior to this date, Canada had no official flag, though the Canadian Red Ensign and sometimes the Union Jack served this purpose. Through a design contest and hard fought parliamentary battles, the maple leaf flag was chosen to represent the nation.
Since February 15, 1965, when it made its first official appearance, the maple leaf flag has become an almost universally known symbol of Canada. I would suggest reading I Stand for Canada by Rich Archbold for an excellent retelling of the story of this iconic flag.
Flying from the flag pole is the flag of Canada and hanging from the porch are flags of Flying the colors of Canada, as well as the Provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Alberta, and British Columbia as well as the Territory of Nunavut.
