I’m a day late in flying these flags, but North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the union on November 2, 1889. They were the 39th and 40th states admitted to the union, but no one knows which is 39 and which is 40, as President Benjamin Harrison, when signing the proclamations, shuffled the papers on his desk and covered up all but the signature line of the documents. No one knows which state he signed into existence first.
My North Dakota flag was flown over the State Capitol in Bismarck and I purchased my South Dakota flag from the department of general services in Pierre.
