On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American to enter space. His suborbital flight lasted just over 15 minutes and reached an apogee (maximum altitude of 101 nautical miles.
Today the flag of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration flies to commemorate this first American journey into space. The flag has a nay blue background and features the NASA seal.
