May 15, 2020 – Northern Territory

This afternoon, a flag that I ordered from National Flags in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia arrived in the mail after a fifty day journey from the Australian tropic to Holyrood Drive. As soon as it arrived, I hauled it up the flag pole!

The flag of the Northern Territory was adopted in 1978, when the territory received self governance. It is the only state or territorial flag in Australia not to feature the color blue. Quoting the Northern Territory government’s web site,

“”It includes the three official NT colours – black, white and red ochre (PMS 159) – and a stylised version of the Territory’s floral emblem, the Sturt’s Desert Rose. The Desert Rose on the red ochre panel has seven petals with a seven-pointed star in the centre, symbolising the six Australian states and the NT. The five white stars sitting on the black panel on the left of the flag represent the Southern Cross.”

We visited the Northern Territory during our trip to Australia earlier this year. We arrived in Darwin by air. The next day we boarded a train called The Ghan, which took us on a four day journey through the center on the continent to Adelaide. On the second day of our Journey, we made a stop in Alice Springs and visited City Hall. I asked if they knew of any store that sold the NT flag. They referred me to a store in Darwin, called National Flags and gave me the phone number. Of course, we were not going to get back to Darwin on our trip, so when I returned home, I got in contact with Ronald C. Strachan, the owner of National Flags, who sent this NT flag to me.
