Today’s the flag of South Carolina flies. This flag originated in 1775, when Colonel William Moultrie deigned the Moultrie flag, also known as the Liberty Flag, and flew it over Fort Johnson.

In 1861, the South Carolina General Assembly added the Palmetto, in commemoration of Moultrie’s defense of Sullivan’s Island. Of that battle, wikipedia states, “On June 28, 1776, an incomplete fort was held by colonial forces under Colonel William William Moultrie against an onslaught by the British under General Sir Henry Clinton’s army sailing with Commodore Sir Peter Parker’s men-of-war. The British cannon had no effect on the sand-filled palmetto log walls of the fort; the only fatalities were the result of those shots that carried over the walls.” Between 1700 and 1775, Sullivan’s Island served as a quarantine station for a large number of slaves which were brought into the United States.

Thanks to my fellow NASA Tweetup alumnus Miller Murphy, who is a proud South Carolinian, who pointed me to a flag shop in South Carolina from which I purchased this flag!
