July 3, 2020 – The Continuing Danger to American Democracy

On May 29, 2020, I flew the flag of the United States with the union down as a signal of the danger our democracy is facing and as a mark of respect for the life of George Floyd and the many other people of color whose lives have been taken under the color of law.

Today, I again fly the flag of the United States with the union down in recognition of the continuing danger to our democracy. In the month since I originally raised this sign of distress, our President has amplified the voices of hate, continually minimized a worldwide pandemic, and generally denigrated the democracy which we hold dear. Keeping our community safe and healthy has become a political issue, people of color continue to be marginalized, and our nation continues to be more divided than it has been in many, many years.

Tomorrow is Independence Day, which is my favorite holiday of the year. Normally, this holiday is about gathering with friends and family to celebrate. My family will celebrate in place tomorrow, we will take the day to reflect upon the blessings of liberty that have been bestowed upon our nation. We will remember the people in the United States and around the world who have been marginalized. We will do our part to keep our community safe and healthy.
