On July 28, 1868 Secretary of State William H. Seward proclaimed the official adoption of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment, arguably one of the most consequential amendments to this day, addresses citizenship rights and equal protection under the law and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the Civil War.
