October 28, 2020 – Liberty Enlightening the World

On this date in 1886, Liberty Enlightening the World, better known as the Statue of Liberty, was dedicated.

Inscribed on the base of this statue, as a part of the poem A New Colossus by Emma Lazarus, are the words,

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

These words of welcome to immigrants are what our country should aspire to! Like any piece of work from over a century ago, the whole poem has some problematic themes, but I choose to highlight these stanzas because they represent what how I believe our country should behave.
