November 4, 2020 – Commodore Perry Flag

“Don’t Give Up the Ship” seems an appropriate mantra for this morning. We wake up today in much the same state we were yesterday, filled with uncertainty, anxiety, and dread. Though we’ve woken up to days when the world has changed this year, today isn’t one of them.

Though there is much to be anxious about, and much to figure out about what will come in the weeks and months ahead, I’m going to work hard to not give up on our country. I’m under no illusions that our country is perfect, I’m under no illusions about our nation’s difficult history and the privilege from which I’m able to view the world. Our founders believed that the work of creating a nation was ongoing and everlasting. The preamble to the Constitution speaks of the creation of “A More Perfect Union” not a perfect union. The pyramid on the back of the Seal of the United States is unfinished. It’s a symbol of the continual work to be done to live up to the promise of our nation.

There is work to be done to keep the dream of our nation alive. There is work to be done to live up to the ideals of our nation. There is work to be done to ensure that all Americans can experience the freedom and justice promised by our founders.

Whomever wins the election, I renew my commitment to do all that I can to make the dream a reality for all of my fellow Americans. I refuse to give up the ship.
