Today, the flag of the state of Maine flies in celebration of its admission to the Union on March 15, 1820 as the 23rd state. Formerly a part of Massachusetts, Maine became a state in its own right on this day.
There’s an interesting discussion going on in Maine right now about its state flag. There are two competing designs, both with history to back them up. Here’s an interesting NYT opinion piece about the two flags of Maine and what the debate says about our country.

Also flying is the flag of Australia, commemorating our visit there one year ago.
