On May 4, 1776, the colony of Rhode Island declared its independence from the United Kingdom, making it the first non-indigenous nation in North America. This act preceded the other 12 colonies by two months.
Today the flags of the state of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Regiment fly in celebration of this historic act.
