Today, the flags of the United States and California fly at half staff in memory of Mary Lu Lillevand, the mother of a good friend of mine, who recently passed away. Mary Lou was a tireless advocate for her children, as illustrated for this story – told in the words of Brian Judd – “Mary Lou went to register her young daughter as the first girl to play fast pitch baseball in the Oakland Athletic League. The woman at the registration table clarified (with disdain) that this was a boys baseball league, to which Mary Lou asked,“Do you have a girls fastpitch league?” When the negative response came Mary Lou replied, “Well… I guess she’ll play in the boys league then, won’t she?!” And so it was.”
Keeping the Lillevand family is our hearts today and always!
