Today, the flag of the Bridge of Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy flies in commemoration of the 122nd playing of the Army – Navy Football game. I have a long history of supporting the Navy in this match up. My brigade flag formerly belonged to Mr. John Alvis, the man who game me my flag pole, who was a Navy pilot.
In college, I met a friend named Jane Brazell, whose father was in the Army and we began a tradition. Whose ever team lost the game had to call the other and wish a heartfelt congratulations to the other person. For much of our friendship, Jane was the one to make that call and she always upheld her end of the tradition with grace and dignity. In 2016, I had the pleasure of calling and congratulating Jane after Army won the game for the first time in 14 years. It was a fortunate occurrence because fate took her from us in March of the following year. Her niece Becca has taken over her portion of the tradition, so I’m hopeful to receive a call from her later today!

Also flying is Mr. Alvis’s United States flag.
