Today, the flag of the state of Hawaii flies in celebration of the 50th state’s admission to the Union on August 21, 1959. The Flag of Hawaii is the only state flag that was once the flag of another country.

Also flying today is a flag that I’ve wanted for a long time, the flag of the City of Chicago. The flag was originally adopted in 1917, designed by Wallace Rice. Originally, the flag had two stars, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the World’s Columbian Exposition. In 1933, a third star was added to commemorate the Century of Progress Exposition held that year. In 1939, a fourth star was added to commemorate Fort Dearborn.
