February 8, 2023 – Nova Scotia & Newfoundland and Labrador

For some reason, I wanted to fly flags that are based in the color white today, so I chose to head out to eastern Canada.

Nova Scotia means “new Scotland” and its flag is nearly a reverse of the flag of Scotland. Whereas the St. Andrew’s cross on the Scottish flag is white with a blue background, it is blue with a white background on the Nova Scotia flag. The cross on the flag of Nova Scotia is overlaid with the Royal Crest of Scotland.

The flag of Newfoundland and Labrador also flies today. The flag, which resembles the Union Flag, which was the province’s flag from 1931 to 1980.

Each of the four colors on the flag is representative of the province:

  • White is representative of snow and ice;
  • Blue represents the Sea;
  • Red represents human effort; and
  • Gold our confidence in ourselves.
