January 5, 2024 – Liechtenstein and Switzerland

Today, the flags of Switzerland and Liechtenstein fly. I visited both countries in 1994 and fell in love with both!

The flag of Liechtenstein has been in use since 1764, was put into the principality’s constitution in 1921, and updated with the addition of the crown in 1937. This addition occurred after the after the country discovered at the 1936 summer olympics that its flag was identical to the Haitian civil flag, according to Wikipedia.

The white cross dates as a symbol of Switzerland since the late 13th or early 14th centuries. The Swiss flag, in its current for, dates to the late 1800s. It was formally codified into Swiss law in 1931 and updated in 2013.
