“If you build it, He will come” is the immortal phrase spoken by The Voice in W.P. Kinsella’s book Shoeless Joe, which was later adapted in to the movie “Field of Dreams.”
Last summer, I took a road trip across the United States and one of the stops was the town of Dyersville, Iowa. Just outside of town is the site where a corn field was transformed into a baseball field for the film. The sight has become a must see destination for devotees of the game and is an amazing place to visit. The field is there, the farmhouse is there, and they have balls, bats, and gloves for anyone to use and play the nation’s pastime.
While there, I noticed an United States flag flying in right field and an Iowa flag flying in left field. Being the vexillologist that I am, I knew these would be a great addition to my collection. I contacted the operators of the site and spoke with Craig Purcell, who is the Manager of Visitor Experience. He was kind enough to send me both a United States flag and an Iowa flag that had flown over the field. Both are definitely in used condition, so I will fly them sparingly, but today, they fly in celebration of the beginning of baseball season!
