April 20, 2024 – Djibouti and Namibia

Today’s flags come from the African continent. Flying are the flags of the nations of Djibouti and Namibia.

My Djiboutian flag was a gift from my sister. When she purchased the flag during a visit to the country, the person she was buying the flag from told her that this is the original Djiboutian flag from independence in 1977. Not a copy, not something made in subsequent years, but the original flag flown when the country became independent. I’m honored to have such an artifact in my collection…

According to Wikipedia, “The light blue represents the sky and the sea, as well as the Issa Somalis, green represents the everlasting green of the earth, as well as the Afars, white represents the colour of peace and the red star represents the unity and the blood shed by the martyrs of independence.” This design was adopted in 1977, shortly after the nation gained independence from France.

today is the flag of the African nation of Namibia, which was adopted in 1990 upon its independence from South Africa. The flag has a white-edged red diagonal band radiating from the lower hoist-side corner. The upper triangle is blue, charged with a gold sun with 12 triangular rays and the lower triangle is green. The origin of the flag is disputed, with several people claiming the design.
