Today the flags of the Swiss Confederation and the State of Colorado fly.

The Swiss flag flies in commemoration of the national day of Switzerland, which celebrates the anniversary of the federal charter of 1291. Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. The date refers to a historic alliance concluded in 1291 by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden. This alliance was to become the focal point around which the Switzerland of today was built over the next 500 years, according to the Swiss national tourism web site.

On August 1, 1876, Colorado was admitted to the union as the 38th state. This event is celebrated annually in late July and early August. This year, there are over 500 events celebrating the state’s admission to the union.
Colorado’s flag is one of my favorite state flags!
