Today, the flag of Gibraltar flies, in a belated celebration of this British Overseas Territory’s national day, which takes place on September 10th of each year. Originally organized as a political rally to support the territory’s connection to the UK, this celebration has morphed into one of civic pride and identity in the last two decades.

The flag of Gibraltar is “an escutcheon on which the upper two thirds shall be a white field and on the said field set a red castle, and below the said castle, on the other third of the escutcheon, which must be a red field in which there must be a white line between the castle and the said red field, there shall be a golden key which hangs by a chain from the said castle, as are here figured”.

Interestingly, Gibraltar’s is the only flag of a British overseas territory that doesn’t feature the Union Jack and/or is not a British ensign.

Also flying is the flag of the United Kingdom, in celebration of Gibraltar’s history and connection with the UK.
