Today, the flags of the State of California, the City and County of San Francisco, and the City of Oakland fly in commemoration of the 35th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. This 6.9 earthquake occurred at 5:04 p.m. on October 17, 1989, just before the start of game three of the 1989 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. A portion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsed as did a 1.25 mile section, known as the Cypress Structure, of Interstate 880.
Though it only lasted 15 seconds, 63 people were killed, 3,757 were reported injured, and 12,053 displaced by the quake, according to the California Department of Conservation.
