Today, the new flags of Utah and Minnesota fly. Both of these flags were gifts I received today!
The current flag of Utah, also known as the beehive flag, was adopted on March 9, 2024. The red, white, and blue tricolor references the colors of the flag of the United States. At the top, a blue stripe symbolizes Utah’s skies and lakes and fundamental principles such as faith, knowledge, and freedom. It also imitates the blue background of the state’s historic flag. The white middle stripe evokes peace and is divided into five peaks, representing the snowy peaks of Utah’s mountains. Below, a red canyon stripe signifies Southern Utah’s desert landscapes and the spirit of perseverance. In the center of the flag, a beehive design represents Utah’s industrial character and official nickname, the Beehive State. The gold hexagon resembles honeycomb, representing the strength of Utah’s people. The beehive within the hexagon symbolizes industry, prosperity, and unity. Below the beehive is a five-pointed star, which honors the five original tribal nations in Utah, and also alludes to Utah’s 45th star on the American flag, representing the state’s allegiance to the nation.

The state of Minnesota’s new flag was adopted on May 11, 2024. On its left side, the flag contains a dark blue background with a white, 8-point star. One of the points of the star points north, representing the state’s motto “L’étoile du Nord.” The 8-point star mirrors the one on floor of the Rotunda of the Minnesota State Capitol, which features inlaid African marble with a brass outline of the 8-point star as designed by Cass Gilbert. From an angle the 8-point star also creates the illusion of four-letter Ms. The dark background is a stylized shape of the outline of the State of Minnesota, representing the land of Minnesota. The remainder of the flag is a solid, bright blue, representing water. Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes, the home of the Headwaters of the Mississippi River, Lake Superior, and the start of the Great Lakes Basin. It consists of a dark blue field representing the night sky and the state’s shape, an eight-pointed star representing the North Star, and a bright blue field representing the state’s abundant waters.
