Today, the flag of the United States flies at half staff in celebration of the life of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. President Carter was a peanut farmer, a naval officer, a state senator, a governor before he assumed the highest elected office in the United States in 1977. He served one term and left office in 1981. Since that time, he and his wife Rosalynn have been global leaders in efforts to help those in need in the United States and the world.
