Today, the flags of the United States and the State of California fly at half staff in memory of the lives lost in the wildfires burning in Los Angeles County. As of yesterday, there have been at least 16 deaths, 10,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed, and almost 40,000 acres have been burned.
This brings me back to the Oakland Hills Fire of 1991, which burned very close to my home. This kind of events are tragedies and happening at the beginning of January is extraordinary. My thoughts are with the families of those killed, the families who have lost their homes, and the hundreds of first responders and other personnel who are working to contain these fires and assist those affected by them.
The flags continue to fly at half staff in memory of President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024. In accordance with 4 USC 7 (m), the flag will be flown at half staff in President Carter’s memory until January 28, 2025.
