Today, the flags of the state of Indiana and the Commonwealth of Kentucky fly, commemorating my second visit to Indiana and my first to Kentucky last week.

The current flag is the state’s third and was commissioned in 1916 to celebrate the state’s centennial. Designed by Paul Hadley, the flag was adopted on May 31, 1917 and standardized in 1955. It is defined in Indiana Code Section IC 1-2-2-1.

The current flag of the Kentucky is the second in the history of the commonwealth. It was adopted on March 26, 1918 and standardized June 14, 1962. Designed by Jesse Cox Burgess, the flag is defined in Kentucky Revised Statutes section 2.030.
