Today, the flags of the Vatican and Argentina fly at half staff to commemorate the life of Pope Francis, who passed away this morning. Pope Francis was elected the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit pope on the13th of March 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on February 28th of the same year.

Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. He was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969; consecrated a bishop on June 27, 1992; and created a cardinal on February 21, 2001 by Pope John Paul II.
