May 29, 2024 – Rhode Island and Finland

Today, the flag of Rhode Island flies in commemoration of the state’s ratification of the United States Constitution on May 29, 1790, the last of the original 13 colonies to do so.

Section 42-4-3 of the State of Rhode Island General Laws defines the flag as follows:

The flag of the state shall be white, five feet and six inches (5′6″) fly and four feet and ten inches (4′10”) deep on the pike, bearing on each side in the center a gold anchor, twenty-two inches (22″) high, and underneath it a blue ribbon twenty-four inches (24″) long and five inches (5″) wide, or in these proportions, with the motto “Hope” in golden letters thereon, the whole surrounded by thirteen (13) golden stars in a circle. The flag shall be edged with yellow fringe. The pike shall be surmounted by a spearhead and the length of the pike shall be nine feet (9′), not including the spearhead.

Today, the flag of Finland flies in commemoration of its adoption on May 28, 1918. This design dates to the mid-1800’s when it was created by a yacht club. It was adopted as the national flag the year after Finnish independence from Russia.

Finland’s flag was most recently defined in 1978 by passage of the Flag Act by the Finnish Parliament.
