September 27, 2025 – Irregular Shaped Flags

Today, the Flags of Nepal and the State of Ohio fly to highlight their shapes.

Adopted in 1962, the flag of Nepal is one of three non-rectangular national flags in the world and the only one that is not a quadrilateral. Part 1, Section 8 of the 2015 Nepalese Constitution defines the flag as follows:

“National flag: (1) The national flag of Nepal consists of two juxtaposed triangular
figures with a crimson-coloured base and deep blue borders, there being a white
emblem of the crescent moon with eight rays visible out of sixteen in the upper
part and a white emblem of a twelve rayed sun in the lower part.”

The flag is further defined in Schedule 1 of the 2015 Constitution, which, for reasons of brevity, I will not reproduce here.

My version of Nepal’s flag is not the proper aspect ratio, due to production costs for the non-standard dimensions.

The flag of the state of Ohio is the only non-rectangular state flag in the United States. Section 5.01 of the Ohio Revised Code defines the flag as follows:

“The flag of the state shall be burgee-shaped. It shall have three red and two white horizontal stripes that represent the roads and waterways of the state. The union of the flag shall be seventeen five-pointed stars, white in a blue triangular field that represents the state’s hills and valleys, the base of which shall be the staff end or vertical edge of the flag, and the apex of which shall be the center of the middle red stripe. The stars shall be grouped around a red disc superimposed upon a white circular “O.” The thirteen stars grouped around the “O” represent the original states of the United States and the four stars added to the peak of the triangle symbolize that Ohio was the seventeenth state admitted to the union. The “O” represents the “O” in “Ohio” and suggests the state’s nickname, the buckeye state. The proportional dimensions of the flag and of its various parts shall be according to the official design on file in the office of the secretary of state. One state flag of uniform dimensions shall be furnished to each company of the organized militia.”

My flag of Nepal was a Christmas gift. I purchased my Ohio state flag on a visit to the statehouse in Columbus in 2009.
