Today, the flag of the Republic of Korea flies in celebration of National Foundation Day, or 개천절 (gaecheonjeol). This date commemorates the foundation of Gojoseon (古朝鮮), the first Korean kingdom, by Dangun (檀君) over 4,350 years ago. The 90 Day Korean site has an interesting explanation of the holiday, as does the the National Folk Museum of Korea. Interestingly, this holiday is celebrated in both North and South Korea.

Also flying today is the flag of the Canadian province of Alberta, in celebration of friends who are visiting from Calgary!
