November 8, 2025 – Vice President Cheney and Montana

Today, the flag of the United States flies at half staff in memory of Vice President Richard Cheney, who passed away on November 3, 2025, in accordance with 4 USC 7 (m). Vice President Cheney was one of the most consequential Vice Presidents our nation has ever had. He also served for a decade as Montana’s United States Representative. Mr. Cheney served as Secretary of Defense, White House Chief of Staff, Deputy Assistant to the President, as well as other positions within the government.

Also flying today is the flag of the state of Montana, in commemoration of this state’s admission, on November 8, 1889, as the 41st state in the Union. The current flag was adopted in 1905, and the word “Montana” above the seal was added in 1981.

Montana

It is defined in §1-1-502 of Montana Code Annotated as follows: “There is hereby established a state flag of Montana. The state flag of Montana shall be a flag having a blue field with a representation of the great seal of the state in the center and with golden fringe along the upper and lower borders of the flag; the same being the flag borne by the 1st Montana Infantry, U.S.V., in the Spanish-American War, with the exception of the device, “1st Montana Infantry, U.S.V.”; and above the great seal of the state shall be the word “MONTANA” in helvetica bold letters of gold color equal in height to one-tenth of the total vertical measurement of the blue field.
