The flag of Finland flies in recognition of Independence Day in the nordic nation. It celebrates the independence of Finland from Russia in 1917.

The design of the flag has its roots in Helsinki in 1861. According to the Ministry of the Interior of Finland, “The Finnish flag displays a blue cross on a white field.” There are three versions of the Finnish flag, the National Flag, the Rectangular State Flag, and the State Flag with three points. THe latter two being restricted to governmental uses.

Again quoting the Ministry of the Interior, “The national flag is rectangular and has the following dimensions:

  • Each canton has a height of 4 units; the cantons in the hoist have a length of 5 units and those in the fly, 10 units
  • Height 11 and width 18 units of measurement
  • Each arm of the blue cross has a width of 3 units”

This flag was a gift from my wife when she visited Finland in 2010.

Also flying today is the flag of Denmark, another nordic nation which I have roots in on my stepmother’s side of the family.

Though it is customary to fly national flags of similar size, my Finnish flag is a bit smaller than the usual flag size I fly. There is no ill intent or negative association intended.
