On January 27, 1967, during a test on the pad in Florida, Apollo 1 Command Pilot Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Senior Pilot Ed White, and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee were killed due to electrical sparks igniting in a highly pressurized oxygen environment. The accident was the first of NASA’s three major accidents which killed astronauts.

The flags of the United States and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are flown today in memory of the Apollo 1 astronauts.
