Today, the True South Antarctica Flag flies. Antarctica is a continent without countries, governed under the Antarctic Treaty. There have been several proposed designs for Antarctic flags, but the most striking in my mind is the True South Antarctic flag.

On his website, True South Flag (which is now in archived status), the designer of the flag, Evan Townsend, described the purpose of the flag thusly, “Antarctica’s value to humankind is incalculable, but it is one of the most inaccessible places on Earth. Most people have never met someone who has been to Antarctica, and far fewer have experienced the continent for themselves. In the absence of opportunities for exposure and awareness, the flag of Antarctica is an especially powerful symbol. By building community among people and promoting cooperation among countries, True South can make a material difference in the welfare of the continent.”

On this site, there is also a great page describing other flags designs for the continent, the Antarctic Treaty, and other flags which have been linked to the continent. It’s worth a read.

I like this design because it elegantly shows the two main colors I saw when I visited the continent in 2005. The blue of the sky and water as well as the white of the snow and ice. Visit my Flickr site to see photos of my visit to the icy continent.

Also flying today are the flags of the two countries I transited through to get to Antarctica and back home, Argentina and Chile.
