The Political Constitution of the United Mexican States was originally ratified on February 5, 1917. It is founded on seven fundamental principals:

  • A declaration of rights
  • Sovereignty of the nation
  • Separation of powers
  • Representative government
  • Federalism
  • Constitutional remedy
  • Supremacy of the State over the Church

The constitution has been amended several times since its adoption. The full text of the constitution is available in Spanish and English.

Article 3 of the LEY SOBRE EL ESCUDO, LA BANDERA Y EL HIMNO NACIONALES (Law of the National Coat of Arms, Flag, and Anthem) describes the flag as follows, “The National Flag consists of a rectangle divided into three vertical stripes of equal size, with the colors in the following order, starting from the flagpole: green, white, and red. In the center of the white stripe is the National Coat of Arms, with a diameter equal to three-quarters of the width of that stripe. The ratio of the flag’s width to its length is four to seven. It may bear a ribbon or tie in the same colors at the base of the flagpole finial. A model of the National Flag, authenticated by the three branches of the Federal Government, shall be kept in the National Archives, and another in the National Museum of History.”
