Today, the flag of South Africa flies in celebration of a visit from our South African friend who currently lives in Texas. The flag of Malawi also flies because South Africa was my transit point to get to Malawi when I visited in summer 2025.
South Africa

According to the South African Government, “The national flag was designed by a former South African State Herald, Mr Fred Brownell, and was first used on 27 April 1994. The design and colours are a synopsis of principal elements of the country’s flag history. Individual colours, or colour combinations represent different meanings for different people and therefore no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours.
The central design of the flag, beginning at the flagpost in a ‘V’ form and flowing into a single horizontal band to the outer edge of the fly, can be interpreted as the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity. The theme of convergence and unity ties in with the motto Unity is Strength of the previous South African Coat of Arms.”
Malawi

Malawi shares its name with the Chewa word for flames and is linked to the Maravi people from whom the Chewa language originated.
The flag of Malawi was adopted on the same day Malawi gained independence from the British empire on July 6, 1964. The Malawi flag has a black band on top, with a red rising sun superimposed upon it. This feature is also present in the nation’s coat of arms, and represents the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa. The black represents the indigenous people of the continent. Below that is the red stripe representing the blood of the independence struggle. At the bottom is the green stripe representing nature.
