Today, the flag of the State of California flies in celebration of my friend Alan’s 60th birthday. Alan is one of the kindest, most insightful people I’ve ever met. His self-awareness, compassion, empathy, and determination are things I aspire to emulate on a daily basis. I feel lucky to call him my friend.
