Today, the United States and State of Wyoming flags fly in celebration of the visit of Union Pacific Railroad Locomotive 4014 (also known as “Big Boy”) to California. It arrived yesterday, in Portola at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum, where it was on display today. Tomorrow, it will proceed down the Feather River Canyon to Roseville, where it will be on display Friday and Saturday. Sunday, it will head over Donner Pass on the way back to its home in Cheyenne, Wyoming,

UP 4014 operated in revenue service from 1941 to 1961. After retirement, it was displayed for almost 60 years at the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California. In 2013, after surveying all eight of the surviving Big Boy locomotives, Union Pacific reacquired the locomotive and took it to the UP steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming for restoration. It traveled under its own power again in 2019 and has been in excursion service since that time. It’s the world’s largest operational steam locomotive.
