Today the flag of the United States flies in honor of Veterans’ Day and the flag of the State of Washington flies in celebration of the state’s admission to the union on November 11, 1889.
Celebrated every November, Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. military. The flag that is flying today belonged to John Alvis, who fostered my love of flags and gave me my flag pole. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy.
The Washington flag flying today was a gift from my friend Nova on the occasion of my moving back to California after ten years living in Washington. As we were both employees of the Washington State Legislature at the time, Nova chose to abide by RCW 9.86.030 and not have my coworkers sign the flag which was flown over the Washington State Legislative Building in Olympia.
