November 13, 2021 – Visitors from Rhode Island

Today, to welcome visitors to our block from Rhode Island, the flag of Rhode Island as well the Continental Flag fly.

The present flag of the state of Rhode Island was formally adopted in 1897. It is white and consists of a gold anchor in the center (a symbol for hope) surrounded by thirteen gold stars (for the original 13 colonies and Rhode Island’s status as the 13th state to ratify the Constitution). A blue ribbon below the anchor bears the state’s motto in gold: “HOPE.”

The Continental Flag, which has long been a symbol of New England, is also flying. There are several versions of this flag, but most have a red (or blue) field with a pine tree in the canton. As I grew up as a fan of Stanford University, we also called this flag the Stanford flag, as it has the university’s colors (red and white) and features a tree, which is a symbol of Stanford.
