Today, the flag of the Orkney Islands of Scotland flies. Many generations ago, my family emigrated from the Orkneys to the United States. I’ve been lucky to visit twice, most recently last month. While on that trip, I purchased the flag of the islands, which, by chance had been approved months before my previous visit in 2007.

This flag was selected by an islands wide referendum to select from five designs, each of which had been submitted by islanders. The previous flag of Orkney, the traditional flag of St. Magnus was adopted in 1995, but was denied official recognition by the Scottish Heraldic Authority, Lord Lyon King of Arms, because of its similarity with other national flags.
Also flying is the Saltire, the flag of Scotland.
