Today, the flag of the Republic of Ireland flies in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The flag of Italy flies in celebration of the unification of the Italian Nation on March 17, 1861.

Ireland

St. Patrick’s Day celebrates Ireland’s patron saint and is a cultural and religious celebration around the world. St. Patrick is said to have died on March 17, 461. He is credited with bringing christianity to Ireland.

Article 7 of the Constitution of Ireland states, “The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange.”

Italy

On March 17, 1861, the Kingdom of Italy was officially born, with the promulgation of law no. 4671 of the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Article 12 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic states, “The flag of the Republic is the Italian tricolour: green, white and red, in three vertical bands of equal size.”
