Today, the flag of England flies in celebration of this nation’s patron saint, St. George. April 23rd is his his feast day, commemorating the date of his death.

This flag dates to at least 1190, when the City of London adopted it as a flag for its ships sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. St. George’s cross, as this flag is also known is a component part of the Flag of the United Kingdom (which also flies today), along with the Flag of Scotland (St. Andrew’s Cross) and St. Patrick’s Cross.
