On May 6th of each year, the new recruits of the Pontifical Swiss Guard of Vatican City are sworn in. This date commemorates the Sacco di Roma in 1527, when mercenaries of Charles V overran Rome. Fewer than 20% of the Swiss Pontifical Guard survived, but they managed to get Pope Clements VII to safety.

Today, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is made up of Swiss Catholic males between the ages of 19 and 30 and is considered to be an elite military unit. There are approximately 135 members today.
