Today, the flags of Saskatchewan and Alberta fly in celebration of their confederation with Canada on September 1, 1905.
The flag of Alberta was adopted on June 1, 1968, by The Flag Act, Chapter 31 of the laws of 1968. In 2000, the Alberta Legislative Assembly adopted the Symbols of Alberta Act, in which section 3 defines the flag as follows: “(1) A blue flag with the provincial shield centred on it is hereby
appointed and declared as the Flag of Alberta. (2) The Flag shall be of the proportions 2 by length and one by width. (3) The blue of the Flag shall be a shade of blue conforming with the Canadian General Standards Board, Specification 1-GP-12c-P.II, 1965: Standard paint colour-blue 202-101. (4) The provincial shield centred on the Flag shall extend to 7/11 of the width of the flag.”
I purchased my Alberta flag in Edmonton at the Legislative Assembly building in 2003.
The flag of Saskatchewan was adopted on September 22, 1969. It was established by a Royal Proclamation published in Vol. 65, No. 38, The Saskatchewan Gazette of September 19, 1969. It was described as follows, “A flag of rectangular shape of the proportions two by length and one by width consisting of two horizontal bars, the upper green, the lower yellow (gold) with the armorial bearings of the province occupying in height 7/10ths of the upper quarter next to the staff and the provincial emblem , the prairie lily, occupying in height 6/10ths of the half farthest from the staff…” It was codified in the Provincial Emblems and Honours Act of 1988, as follows, “A flag in the rectangular shape consisting of two horizontal bars, the upper green, the lower yellow (gold), with the shield of arms of Saskatchewan occupying the upper quarter nearest the staff and the floral emblem, the western red lily, occupying the half farthest from the staff.”
