Today, the flag of South Carolina flies in celebration of the state’s ratification of the United States Constitution on May 23, 1788 as the 8th state.
The current flag of South Carolina dates back to January 26, 1861. It is based upon the Moultrie flag from the revolutionary war, which had the same blue background and crescent in the upper left hand corner, but no palmetto tree.
