Today, the flags of Tanzania and Portugal fly in celebration of each nation’s flag day.
Tanzania
The flag of Tanzania was adopted on June 30, 1964 to replace the individual flags of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The National Emblems Act defines the flag as follows, “A rectangular flag divided into two equal portions diagonally from the right-hand upper corner to the left-hand lower corner; the upper portion of green colour and the lower portion of blue colour; the dividing bands being of golden, black and golden collars; the two golden bands of equal size and smaller than the central black band.”
Portugal
The flag of Portugal was adopted on June 30, 1911. Government Journal #141, passed by the National Assembly on June 19, 1911 and published in Government Diary #150 on June 30, 1911. The flag is defined as follows (translated from the original Portguese), “The National Flag is vertically divided into two fundamental colors, dark green and scarlet, with the green on the hoist side. In the center, and superimposed on the union of the two colors, will be the shield of the National Arms, bordered in white and resting on the Manueline armillary sphere, in yellow and outlined in black. The dimensions and further details of the flag’s design, specifications, and decoration are those of the opinion of the commission appointed by decree of October 15, 1910, which will be immediately published in the Government Gazette.”
